Understanding the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

ADA Legal Consultant William Goren’s Blog

I concentrate my efforts on ADA/Rehabilitation Act consulting, counseling, publishing, and training with the aim of making those laws more understandable. I have been involved with ADA/rehabilitation act compliance since 1990, and I am the author of Understanding the Americans with Disabilities Act, Third Edition (published by the American Bar Association, 2010) as well as numerous other articles on the rights of persons with disabilities.

To these efforts, I bring a deep personal understanding of what it means to have a disability as I am deaf (have a congenital bilateral hearing loss of 65-90 db+ but function entirely in the hearing world thanks to hearing aids and lip reading). For reasons unrelated to my deafness, I also have to use voice dictation technology to access the computer.

I also bring many years of experience as a professor who excelled in the classroom. From 1999 until 2012, I was a full-time professor of legal studies at various institutions in the Chicago area where I taught people how to become paralegals. During that time, I won many awards for teaching excellence. In addition to my ADA compliance practice, I am also an Adjunct Professor of Legal Studies at South Suburban College, located in South Holland and Oak Forest, Illinois, where in the summers I teach an online course on the Americans with Disabilities Act.
