U.S. Access Board to Hold Forum on Assembly Area Accessibility

The Board is particularly interested in design challenges and potential solutions related to the standards issued under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as those that apply to federally funded facilities under the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA).

“It really changed the paradigm,” Alison Barkoff, director of advocacy for the Center for Public Representation, said of the current law which emphasizes “competitive integrated employment” or the payment of at least minimum wage and the opportunity for people with disabilities to create and build important connections in the community.

A bill introduced this month in the U.S. Senate calls for the creation of an Office of Disability Policy. Housed within the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office, the proposed entity would be specifically tasked with reviewing legislative and regulatory plans to assess how they would affect Americans with disabilities.
